GLBL 298 Courses Abroad (3 or 6 Credit Hours)

LAS Global Studies also offers a variety of shorter experiences abroad during the winter break and summer semester through our GLBL 298 courses. These courses are led by affiliated faculty from many departments on campus, and are focused on their geographic and substantive areas of expertise. GLBL 298 courses have an on-campus portion during the second eight weeks of the preceding semester, during which students will be familiarized with the culture and traditions of their destination as well as immersed in the substantive content knowledge of the course. Students will then spend approximately three to six weeks abroad studying the course topic in the field with the faculty member and completing a group research project. Each spring, student participants will have the opportunity to present the results of their research abroad as part of the LAS Global Studies Annual Reception.

Some examples of recent GLBL 298 seminars abroad include:

  • Globalization and the Language and Culture of India
  • Globalization and Urban Inequalities in Cape Town, South Africa
  • Diversity in Modern Turkey
  • Education and Development: A Case Study in Ecuador (check out the video below!)
  • Cyprus: Conflict and Post-Conflict Resolution
  • The Face of Economic Development in Africa
  • Cultural Tourism and Economic Development in Peru

Although these courses do not fulfill the study abroad requirement for the major, they may be applied toward the Foundations seminar requirement. GLBL 298 courses are open to all of campus and require students to apply through the Study Abroad Office and be accepted, so you are encouraged to apply early if you wish to participate in one of these offerings. These courses have no language requirement, so they provide an excellent opportunity to experience a different part of the world from your study abroad destination.
